Safer Kids and Homes, South Florida’s premier baby proofing and child safety firm, is closing its store in the Dixie Pointe Shopping Center and refocusing on the service business that owner and president Patti Norton Laird started two decades ago.

Saturday, August 24th will be the store’s final day, according to Laird. After that, the firm will continue and expand on the expert baby proofing and child safety education services it has been providing since 1994.

“It’s incredible how much the retail business has changed since we opened our store,” explains Laird, who with business partner Janice Pruett decided to enter the retail arena in 2005 to complement their well-established service business. “After a long, painful recession, shoppers are now savvier than ever. And armed with smart phones, they’re able to quickly go online and find the very best price for whatever they’re shopping for.”

Retailers large and small have seen a marked increase in “showrooming,” where customers visit a local store to see and learn more about a particular product, only to buy it online from web-only outfits able to underprice local retailers saddled with high-overhead, bricks-and-mortar locations.

Even though the store is closing, Laird stresses that Safer Kids and Homes is still very much in business, with an experienced child safety team that continues to offer professional in-home baby proofing, safety products, education and expert, customer-focused service.

“After August 24th, Safer Kids and Homes is on the go!” Laird says, noting that their online store will still be open, with a carefully curated selection of safety items, car seats and other high-quality products to keep little ones safe. And, she says, most items will be available for free local delivery.

“None of our in-home services will change,” says Laird. “We’ll still be available for baby proofing, and now we’ll be able to offer our expert car seat safety services at our customers’ homes, our business office in Coconut Grove and at select locations around Miami.” Safer Kids and Homes has in recent years become the go-to provider for expert car seat services, including sales, installation, safety checks and cleaning.

Laird says Safer Kids and Homes is also expanding its partnerships with local hospitals, schools and businesses to bring its services and expertise – which include CPR and child safety classes – to even more people who need them.
