‘Toward a Resilient Pinecrest’ free film and panel discussion

“Toward a Resilient Pinecrest” Workshop Series presents a free film and panel discussion on Wednesday evening, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Pinecrest Gardens in the Banyan Bowl: This Changes Everything, A Film by Avi Lewis, was filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.

Inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller This Changes Everything, this 90-minute film by Avi Lewis is executed with extraordinary detail and richness of its cinematography while providing an epic canvas for exploration of the greatest challenge of our time. Unlike many films about the climate crisis, this is not a film that tries to scare the audience into action: it aims to empower.

The film will then be followed by a provocative discussion by Panel members: Caroline Lewis, Cleo Institute founder and Executive Director; University of Miami Professor John Van Leer, Citizens Climate Lobby; Kamalah Fletcher, Catalyst Miami Climate Justice advocate; and Harvey Ruvin, Chair of Miami Dade County Sea Level Rise Task Force, and Clerk of Courts.

This is the fourth program presented since September 2015 in order to provide our residents with critical information about the various aspects of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise, the scientific data that informs us, how we can reduce our Carbon footprint to mitigate the adverse impacts, and how we as a local government, as businesses and as individuals must prepare for changes we are already experiencing and will see much more severe changes as a result of extreme weather, climate change and sea level rise.

The Village of Pinecrest has long been a leader in advancing its Sustainable policies, Building codes and Comprehensive development land use plans to be a resilient community, to reduce the adverse impacts of future weather related challenges. Together with the CLEO Institute, we have hosted Climate change training for all Village employees, hosted numerous panel discussions and roundtable workshops for other local elected officials for the past several years. The Village Manager and your Mayor have been working on a Draft of a Climate Action Plan that incorporates all of the work over the past few years and the goals for the future.

This series of workshops is aimed at better informing and engaging our residents in taking the action steps necessary to protect and preserve our natural and built environment.

For those interested in getting more involved, in the development of a Climate Action Coalition, please contact Mayor Lerner at Mayorlerner@gmail.com.

Then, save the date for the following month with another film and panel discussion, Wednesday evening, February 17th, also at Pinecrest Gardens at 7:00 p.m.
