Village police win $18,000 for DUI safety equipmentThe Pinecrest Police Department was awarded second place in Florida’s 2013 DUI Challenge and more than $18,000 in traffic safety equipment.

The award came as a result of Village police officers’ resolve in identifying impaired drivers. The equipment includes a laser speed measuring device, as well as LED electronic flares and LED flashlights for all patrol officers.

Village officers made 86 DUI arrests in 2013. There were eight alcohol-related accidents in 2013 and eight more so far this year.

Police Chief Samuel Ceballos, Jr. has been instrumental in allowing his officers to receive advanced training in impaired driver detection. He has also allowed the department’s Drug Recognition Enforcement (DRE) program officers to attend numerous DUI checkpoints and training to gain valuable experience.
