Rumor has it that South Florida’s culture and pride is lost; however, there is no getting around the anticipation and excitement of this year’s spiny lobster mini season. In South Miami, no one looks forward to this season more than Miami native, Spiny Mike Maler, co-owner of Sunset Tavern/ Deli Lane Café and founder of this year’s 6th annual spiny lobster tournament.
With a portion of the proceeds going to the essential Stiltsville Optimist Club, a group of Miami locals who strive to preserve the history of an almost lost legacy of South Florida’s past, Spiny Mike has established a way to percolate the passion in the hearts of all ages. The Stiltsville Optimist Club has entertained over 25 civic organizations that expand the horizons of youths who have, for most, never even had the opportunity to experience a day on the water. Thanks to this club, thousands of people have taken time out of their busy lives to visit Stiltsville and learn about its history.
“We are gathering the best and bravest men and women to compete for the big title again this year,” said Spiny Mike, “we welcome master and novice fishermen to catch the biggest bug of the sea.” The title of SpinyLobster King or Queen, awards $500 cash and a trophy to the biggest bug caught, but that is not all that is awarded. Hermit crab races and 50/50 raffles are only a portion of the festivities that all ages can partake in. Shutterbugs are also invited for a $50 grand prize for the best captured 2015 mini lobster season moment on July 31st, at Sunset Tavern.
Get the sunscreen, swim suits, tickle sticks, and nets ready to bring out the true fishermen in you and your family.
