From South Bronx to South Miami, a journey to healing for Dr. Maye

There is an Irish blessing that says “A hundred thousand welcomes should come to you today.” The expression encapsulates the spirit of the tough Irish Jew who grew up in the projects of the South Bronx and ultimately transitioned from career cop to counselor and doctor Dr. Frank Maye.

After being diagnosed with cancer at the young age of 39, City of Miami Police Department Investigator, Dr. Maye committed to a holistic mind and body treatment plan. The radical alternative healing that eventually settled the overproducing cancer cells into long term remission also resulted in a profound life change. Today Dr. Maye helps cancer patients, autistic children, and adults stuck in post- 40 confusion, find their way to wellness.

“I was happy with the treatment but something was missing in the mind body connection. I don’t know if it was because I was kid from the ghetto who worked my way out and that stuck with me to get my own answers or if it was the cancer itself that led me to where I am today,” said Maye.

The same determination that landed Maye on the football team at prestigious Spelman College in Atlanta also propelled the former homicide detective into a rigorous academic training that resulted in a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine, a Masters in Chinese Medicine and a current PhD candidacy in Biophysics.

“I often ask patients ‘where did you lose your way?’” said Maye. “By the time we are 40 years old, almost everyone is unhappy. We are not living at home anymore, done with education, got a job, car, and are finally at that place that we have been trying to get to all our lives but not happy in our own skin.

“Part of being a good doctor is to turn that around so patients do not need you anymore. The best moments for me in my practice are ones like when a patient’s wife called recently to thank me for giving her her husband back.”

Dr. Maye approaches a patient’s particular situation as he would any investigation, determined to find out “whodunit.” After an initial two hour consultation where a rapport and comfort level in the safe space of his comfortable office is established, the work evolves into specific treatment plans based on herbology, acupuncture, counseling and other elements of healing the entire mind and body. “The body is like a house and we never dismiss anything that can help. Acupuncture is like the electrician and western medicine is like the plumber, you need both to fix a broken house. Herbal pharmacology helps to restore the immune system but we do not rule out synthetics if dealing with conditions like cancer.” Attributing many health challenges to flight-fight response behaviors developed in childhood when children transition from seeing the world as a safe place to the realization (around seven to nine years old) that protection is necessary, the child in all adults still seeks to graduate from idyllic to safe consciously according to Maye. “It is critical to build the confidence in every patient who appears broken; to help the child in us retake control.”
