South Miami has its share of great things to do, as it benefits from some fantastic businesses, shops, parks and Miami’s legendary great weather. For visitors to the area, there’s no shortage of attractions in and near South Miami.
For instance, there are a number of great stores to visit in South Miami’s famous Sunset Place, a definite must-see for any visitor. It’s basically an outdoor mall with numerous unique shops and attractions. Kids will enjoy Cool-De-Sac, a great store that arranges children’s parties with food and entertainment. Adults can visit Game Time, a fun bar with dozens of games, or grab a bite to eat at Dan Marino’s Town Tavern. Sunset Place also offers bowling courtesy of Splitsville Lanes.
Coral Gables is only two miles away from South Miami via South Dixie Highway, and it has some of the most thrilling tourist attractions in all of Miami. Jungle Island, formerly named Parrot Jungle, is a great example of a well-maintained, thoroughly educational conservation park. The Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden is another good park dedicated to the preservation of Florida’s diverse botanical species. Try to budget an entire day when visiting these two attractions.
There are also several performing theaters near South Miami that can provide great, unique entertainment. Some of the more famous theater groups include New Theatre, Laughing Gas Comedy Improv Theatre and Area Stage Company. These groups provide an alternative to megaplex movie theaters such as the AMC 24 in South Miami, and while each may be worth a visit for different reasons, the local performing theatres shouldn’t be skipped.
A final attraction of South Miami is its numerous parks, which offer a great place to take a walk, play basketball or handball, or to join one of several casual sports leagues. Some of the most notable parks in the area include Dante Fascell Park, South Miami Park, Brewer Park and finally Murray Park, which is next to a community center. Enjoying a day in the park is one of the best ways to experience the city’s famous weather.
While South Miami is only about 2.3 square miles, it’s a great city and a good central location for any visit to Miami-Dade County. These attractions should help to provide a starting point for any trip to South Miami.
