South Miami Café is now open for business. The conveniently located cafeteria and deli combination bistro marks the third restaurant venture in 21 years for Miguel and Elizabeth Ruiz and Rolando Ortiz, who also own Airport Café & Liquors and South Beach Munchies. They believe their unique fusion of Cuban, Spanish and American fare will provide the area with something a little different when it comes to dining out.

“I don’t think there’s much competition for our type of food, which was one of the reasons why we wanted to open up here,” said Miguel Ruiz. “Before getting the space, we went around and surveyed the area and we think we’re adding something to the neighborhood that wasn’t there before.”

Located conveniently in the lobby of One 7000 Place just seconds off of Sunset Drive, South Miami Café compliments its modest dining room, which is outfitted with free Wi-Fi and an ATM, with a seemingly boundless menu that caters to all three major meals. For breakfast, there are several combination platters and omelet options. For lunch, there is everything from their signature steak and chicken breast sandwiches to pizza, grilled salmon, shrimp Creole and several salad choices. Early dinner options include churasco steak with fresh plantains and rice, rustic shrimp pasta and grilled mahi. All items are made fresh and on-site in their pristine kitchen, which was renovated from top to bottom with new equipment, and are available throughout the day along with fresh-squeezed juices, espresso and smoothies.

“Even though we’ve only been open for a week, a lot of people have been coming up and telling me how much of an improvement our restaurant is compared to the last place, from the way it looks to the quality of the food,” he said. “When we came here we updated the entire place; everything is new.”

Diners in a hurry will find the cafeteria-style “Express Meals” station especially convenient. For those with no time to sit and enjoy their meal, South Miami Café offers a variety of grab-and-go items in their cooler including daily fresh sushi, vegetables, pasta salads with chicken or tuna, rice pudding, fruit dishes, ice cream and four different flavors of flan, named “What the Flan,” made by their son Reuben, who was a finalist on the 10th season of Food Network Star.

“We’re very excited to be part of the neighborhood here in South Miami and are looking forward to meeting and feeding every one of you,” said Elizabeth Ruiz. “Anyone who comes to South Miami Café will be able to tell right away that we absolutely love what we do. We can’t wait to meet and feed you.”
