Hosted by Alonzo Highsmith, a member of the 1983 National Championship team, the event will benefit the Hurricane Club.
The tournament begins with registration at 11 a.m., including lunch provided by Hole In The Wall Pub. Golfers get started with a 12:30 p.m. tee time on the 18 holes of the Biltmore course. Following the round, the awards dinner will be in one of the historic Biltmore Hotel’s ballrooms. Entry fee includes golf, lunch, awards dinner, a goody bag and a golf shirt.
“This event is a partnership with the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame,” athletic director Blake James said. “Not only will this provide a great opportunity for Hurricane Club Members and Canes Fans to play golf with some Hurricanes greats across all sports, it will raise money to support our current student-athletes who will be future UM Hall of Famers. We are looking forward to a great day of golf at the Biltmore.”
Highsmith, a first-round pick in the 1987 NFL draft, will host this year’s event. An explosive fullback who rushed for nearly 2,000 yards in his UM career, Highsmith’s team-high 50 yards and a touchdown led the Hurricanes to their first national title in the 1984 Orange Bowl Classic. He spent five seasons in the NFL and was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He enters his 17th year with the Green Bay Packers’ as their senior personnel executive.
“It’s truly an honor to host the University Miami Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament and I’m hoping many former players and alumni come out to support it,” Highsmith said. “I’m a proud alumnus of both academics and sports and a Cane for life.”
“For the second consecutive year, we will partner with the Hurricane Club to create a wonderful event that allows fans an opportunity to spend a day playing golf with Hurricane greats of the past,” said UMSHoF President Gerard Loisel. “It’s a great opportunity to not only raise funds for the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame, but to also provide scholarships for future Hall of Famers.”
