‘Fit for Pink’ events help fight breast cancer

By Bari Auerbach….
From spinning, yoga and Zumba – to weight training and kickboxing – the community is invited to participate in “Fit for Pink” fitness classes on Saturday, Sept. 25 and then again on Sunday, Oct. 10 when Olympia Gym hosts two big events to help fight breast cancer.

On Saturday, Sept. 25 starting at 12:30 p.m., trainer Anthony Whymes will lead the “ultimate fitness class for a cause” with proceeds benefitting Olga Shevchenko, a cancer survivor. The class, challenging strength and endurance, will include spinning, dancing, weight training, kickboxing and stretching.

Then on Sunday, Oct. 10, the South Florida Region Hadassah Mitzvah Chapter encourages everyone to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Day from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The series of classes will include yoga from noon to 1 p.m.; spinning from 1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.; Body Forging from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and Zumba from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Chapter president Debbie Miller and Hilary Fein have been garnering great support from local merchants that will be providing refreshments for contributing participants – plus there will be drawings for valuable raffle prizes from sponsors including: Whole Foods Market, Zen Zen Salon, The Changing Room, Danny Mizrachi Salon, Eye Optics, Juice & Java, Broadway Across America, The Forge, Massage Envy, Gallery Art, Contour Day Spa, Big Pink, Prime 112, Lucky Strike and renowned artist Romero Britto, who has donated his artwork for the raffle.

Proceeds from $5 minimum donations will be donated to Hadassah for Breast Cancer Research, Education and Treatment. Hadassah. The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, with over 250,000 members, is the largest volunteer, women’s Zionist organization in the United States.

In 1995, scientists at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, working with the National Institutes of Health, made the breakthrough discovery that a genetic mutation linked to breast cancer, the BRCA gene, was disproportionately present among Ashkenazi Jewish women. Since then, research around the world, including research at Hadassah Medical Center, has focused on the role of the BRCA genes in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

As an organization, Hadassah has advocated for women at risk to be tested for this gene, and as a result of Hadassah’s grassroots lobbying efforts, the GINA Act, the Genetic Information Non- Discrimination Act, was passed. This law prevents insurance and employment discrimination against those who are tested and discovered to be a carrier for any type of genetic disorder.

This year for the first time, Hadassah will be partnering with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fight breast cancer in the U.S., Israel and worldwide with a week of outreach activities in Jerusalem Oct. 25-29 and the establishment of the Israel Breast Cancer Collaborative. During the delegation trip, Komen will call together leading researchers and clinicians for a “Think Tank” designed to jump-start new thinking on breast cancer science. Delegates to the larger mission trip will investigate breast cancer issues and solutions in sessions with Israeli officials and non-governmental organizations.
