2013 Hurricane Season Be Prepared

Typhoon Pat

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 each year and residents should be prepared. Miami-Dade County’s Office of Emergency Management website is a good information source for all residents planning for a family’s needs before, during and after a storm. Go online at www.miamidade.gov/fire/oem.

At that site, you can find Evacuation and Surge Zone Maps, lists of bus pickup locations for those needing transportation to a shelter, lists of shelters, ideas for making your own hurricane kit and much more. Pre-registration is required for petfriendly shelters and special needs residents to ensure a place at a shelter during an emergency.

Special needs are defined as those individuals who do not live in a managed care facility or nursing home. A person who needs help with daily living, or has lifesaving medical equipment dependent on electricity must pre-register for the Special Needs & Emergency Evacuation Assistance Program (PSN/EEAP). Go to: www.miamidade.gov/fire/evacuation- program.asp.

For those residents who may not have access to the computer and would like to pre-register, call the County Answer Line at 311. As the season progresses, check for more hurricane information at the Sunny Isles Beach Sun Community Newspaper, the SIB Living Magazine, the SIBTV Cable Channel 77 or www.sibfl.net.
