Heritage Park construction update

By Vice Mayor Lewis J. Thaler….
As we enter the fall, I want to keep our City residents aware of the latest construction updates on Heritage Park, which is located at 19200 Collins Avenue. The City Commission created the Green Space Initiative to develop parks and open space throughout the city for the enjoyment of our residents. The City has made a commitment to provide neighborhood parks and open green spaces for our residents.

HERITAGE PARK The construction of Heritage Park on 192nd Street and Collins Avenue is nearly 60 percent complete. The park will have numerous amenities, such as walk-paths, playgrounds for toddlers and young children, a dog park and a basketball court. A “Heritage Wall” and a “Veterans Wall” containing the names of residents who have contributed to the progress of the City and who have served our country honorably will also be located in the park. We expect the park to open in January 2011. Some of the events scheduled include a dedication ceremony and grand-opening family day, family movie night, and a sunny serenade concert under the stars. There will also be a pet-friendly animal adoption event with the Humane Society of Greater Miami Adopt- A-Pet and the Aventura/Sunny Isles Beach Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, January 29, 2011.

The park also includes a parking garage which will be used primarily by the Ramada Hotel. The Hotel will pay the City market rent for the use and upkeep of the garage. The rent amount will be more than $300,000 on an annual basis upon the completion of the park. All parking revenues generated from the garage will go directly to the City. Thus, the Hotel is responsible for paying all costs associated with its use of the garage. There will be 500 parking spaces in total with more than 400 spaces to be used by the Hotel. The remaining parking spaces will be available for residents and visitors. A$10 or more per day fee will be charged to non-residents. Residents will be able to buy a yearly pass at a discount to use the parking spaces in the garage. No federal funds were used to build the structure. Upon completion, the parking garage will feature beautiful lattice work on the east side of the structure.

The goal is to make the garage invisible. It should be complete by October 2010.

I invite all residents to the grand opening of Heritage Park in the winter. We will have plenty of family friendly activities.

We will continue to keep our residents updated on the construction progress of Heritage Park. In the interim any questions on this structure can be directed to your city officials at the Sunny Isles Beach Government Center located at 18070 Collins Avenue at 305.947.0606.
