Hurricane Tips… Are we ready?

With the 2012 Hurricane Season beginning on June 1st and running through November 30th, the office of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally A. Heyman, District 4, wants to help get you ready. It is important that YOU develop your own personal disaster plan on how you will protect your household and property. Most of these things can be done well in advance of storm warnings. Check your insurance coverage and be sure it includes replacement coverage, flood and wind protection.

• Establish an out-of-state or out-of- Miami-Dade County area phone number to relay messages to friends and family.

• Familiarize yourself with your evacuation zone and nearest Red Cross Evacuation Center (shelter of last resort).

• Make a plan for the care of your pets during an emergency. Call 3-1-1 to get information on Miami-Dade County’s Pet- Friendly Hurricane Shelters.

• Start buying extra shelf food and storing clean/empty plastic bottles (to fill later for water).

Each week look for tips to help you create a personal hurricane plan. Should you have questions regarding these tips or any other issue in District 4 please call our district office at (305) 787-5999 or email us at District4@miamidade.gov.
