Over 300 community volunteers recently came together in the spirit of camaraderie and compassion for Jewish Community Services’ annual Passover food distribution event. This year’s gathering was called Matzah Mitzvah & Much, Much More because for the first time it was done in collaboration with the Jewish Volunteer Center, a program of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation; PJ Library Miami; and International Good Deeds Day/Ruach Tova.

More than 600 seniors and homebound people received a special kosher for Passover holiday food package, thanks to the efforts of these committed and caring volunteers. As well as delivering food and companionship, activities included assembling the food boxes, creating matzah covers, participating in children’s story telling and painting wall tiles for the JCS Miami Beach Senior Center.

Co-chairing this year’s Matzah Mitzvah & Much, Much More were Lisa and Jay Massirman, with their children Jordan and Drew; and Joanna and Scott Segal, with their children Sean, Nicole, Jonathan, Joshua and Elijah.

“This event is so gratifying because we are making people happy. The two ladies that we delivered food to were overjoyed, not just because of the food but because of the time we spent visiting with them,” said Co-Chair Lisa Massirman. “It was a wonderful way to do something for the community as a family, not just as individuals. We can’t wait to participate again next year.”

Matzah Mitzvah & More is one component in JCS’ array of vital nutritional programs, which include a Kosher Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and congregate meal sites. The largest Jewish social service agency in South Florida, JCS annually serves over 25,000 people, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, with mental health, senior support and vocational programs.
