Kiwanis Key Club at ATMSHS receives Charter

On Thursday evening, January 27, 2011, the Kiwanis Key Club at Alonzo & Tracy Mourning Senior High School received its official charter, club banner, club bell and club gavel. The newly formed Kiwanis Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach – Sunny Isles Beach. Ms. Sally Alayon, Principal of Alonzo & Tracy Mourning SHS asked the Kiwanis Club to open up a Key Club in her newly constructed school. Ms. Katrina Rossi is the Key Club Faculty Advisor and Mr. Jeffrey Berson is the Kiwanis Advisor.

Kiwanis Key Club was established in 1925 and is celebrating its 85th anniversary. There are currently over 250,000 high school students in 28 countries who belong to this “student led” organization. Their focus is to challenge high school students to give back to the community through service projects and to develop individual leadership skills. Above the club level officer, a Key Club member can run the for the office of Lt. Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, District Governor, International Trustee, International Vice President and International President. All officers are elected by the student members.

Ms. Rossi welcomed one and all to the Charter Night Event. She introduced Ms. Lana Nudel, President of the Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach – Sunny Isles Beach. Ms Nudel spoke to the parents and students about how her children have been involved with Key Club and community service. Her youngest son, Bobby, was a Key Club Lt. Governor. Both of her children are attending the University of Florida and are members of the Kiwanis Circle K Club at the school. Next, Kiwanis Advisor Jeffrey Berson was introduced. Before he made his remarks, he introduced the 2010-2011 Key Club Lt. Governor Makisha Noel from North Miami Beach SHS. She spoke about students being their best and seeking leadership positions. Mr. Berson briefly spoke about the great opportunity awaiting the Key Club members as they embark upon their great adventure. Next to be introduced was Mr. Tom Freiwald, current 2010-2011 Lt. Governor for Division 25 from the Kiwanis Club of Miami Lakes. He inspired the audience to find projects in the community and to make a difference. Finally, Mr. David McCampbell, Key Club District Administrator, welcomed the newly established club into the Key Club family. He provided a background to the Key Club organization with an invitation to attend the District and the International conventions. In addition, Ms. Tudor, Assistant Principal at Alonzo & Tracy Mourning SHS greeted the assembly on behalf of Principal Alayon.

After the introductions and brief speeches, the Kiwanis Club of North Miami Beach – Sunny Isles Beach call to the stage the newly elected officers of the Kiwanis Key Club of Alonzo & Tracy Mourning SHS. The Kiwanis members presented a club banner, a club bell, a club gavel and Key Club workbooks. A framed, signed “charter” will be forthcoming from Kiwanis International. Refreshments were served at the conclusion of the ceremony.
