Once every seven years the City of Sunny Isles Beach evaluates its Comprehensive Plan, as required by Florida State law. What is a Comprehensive Plan? It is essentially a blueprint of the city created for existing and future development. The evaluation process looks at any changes that have occurred since last time such as population growth, increased housing units, changes in park space, etc. That kind of valuable information can lead to development of unique strategies to meet the needs of future generations of residents, visitors and businesses.
As part of the process, the City will conduct a series of Town Hall meetings where residents are invited to contribute their thoughts and ideas during breakout sessions with a moderator. The first Town Hall meeting was held at Winston Towers 600 on July 9th in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
Additionally, in order to address critical traffic issues there will be two major studies included with this initiative: a Transportation Master Plan and a Traffic Analysis study. We all agree that traffic and pedestrian safety is of the utmost concern. The Transportation Master Plan study will examine existing traffic conditions in order to identify problems, set objectives, develop strategies and execute appropriate solutions.
The goal of the Traffic Analysis Study is to analyze current levels of service at various key intersections within the City. Resulting data, which includes traffic counts, will be studied to determine capacity, identify deficiencies, etc. at intersections such as 174th Street and Collins Avenue and Sunny Isles Boulevard to name a few.
Lastly, it has always been the City’s intention to give our residents a voice for important issues and concerns. On the City’s website (www.sibfl.net) you will find a survey link which allows you to answer relevant questions that will further help us serve you better. Just look for the “Moving Forward Together” logo and click on “take survey now”. I would like to encourage all of you to participate since we greatly value your opinion.
We hope you are as excited as we are about these initiatives. All the members of the City Commission are deeply aware of the challenges that come with growth. We feel these steps taken will help us make informed decisions to produce real solutions to problems we face on a daily basis.
