MUSIC IS IN THE AIR AT SUNNY ISLES BEACH K-8

Have you heard the music? Have you seen the artwork? Did you attend the Spring Musical at Sunny Isles Beach Community School? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you know that the State of the Fine Arts program at SIB K-8 is stellar. Under the direction of our art and music teachers, our students have won many contests and earned many awards as their talents are showcased throughout the county.

The SIB musicians include members of a strings ensemble, a 7th and 8th grade band, a chorus, an orchestra, and students who play the bells. The orchestra had the honor of performing before 500 people at the Teacher of the Year Luncheon in January at Jungle Island. That same weekend they also entertained at the County’s Science and Engineering Fair. The talented young musicians in the 7th and 8th grade band entertained the guests at the annual Dads and Donuts event.

And then last month we held the fabulous Spring Festival. It was an evening filled with smiles and superb sounds as students serenaded the audience. There were group performances by the chorus, second and fourth grade bells groups, and the orchestra. On display throughout the cafeteria were numerous pieces of artwork that our students created. Music and art truly transformed the room into a magical place.

Just last weekend our String Ensemble performed at the music competition held annually at the Youth Fair. The String Ensemble won a special award for first prize by earning a perfect score from the judges. The participants in the competition were Dana Mercado, Katelyn Pacheco, Stephanie Niles, Maria Larranaga, Nadia Fyffe, Nicole Santana, Saltenat Moghaddan, Sandy Ritvin, Carolina Guevara, and Paloma Keitelman. Congratulations to Mrs. Rabinovich and the String Ensemble for all of their successes.

Now that I whet your appetite for the sounds of success, let me tell you about our annual talent show. Students from kindergarten through eighth grade will be singing, dancing, playing instruments, and performing creative numbers at the Second annual Talent Show, “SIB’s Got Talent”! Save the date – Friday, May 13, 2011. The talent show will be held at the Julius Littman Theater in North Miami and we’d love to have you attend.

Tickets will be on sale soon at the school. After reading this article, I don’t think I need to tell you how important the arts programs are to the school and the number of students they impact. You can imagine our response when we hear talk of eliminating these programs from the schools. SIB values these areas of the curriculum and the commitment to providing a well rounded education to our students.
