Chief Maas

In early January 2011, Sunny Isles Beach City Manager Rick Conner announced his retirement. Mr. Conner will remain as a consultant to the City for its capital improvement projects for the next nine months.

At the January City Commission meeting, Assistant City Manager Jorge Vera was named Acting City Manager by the City Commission. Mr. Vera has been a city employee since 1997. The City Commission has begun a national search for the city manager position.

One of the first priorities for Acting City Manager Jorge Vera was to fill the Chief of Police position vacated by Chief Fred Maas upon his retirement in November 2010. But after being apart from the City for two months, Chief Maas decided it was time to come back home. The C i t y Commission unanimously approved Mr. Vera’s selection for Chief Fred Maas to resume his role as Police Chief at the January City Commission Meeting. Chief Maas officially returns back to work on Monday, January 31, 2011.

Mayor Edelcup announced the Chief’s return at a recent Concerned Citizens Meeting at the Emerald Coast restaurant. His announcement was met with thunderous applause as residents learned of the Chief’s return. Each month Chief Maas would honor his department’s officer of the month at the Concerned Citizens monthly meetings. Many residents look forward to seeing him back in SIB and at their February meeting.
