On March 22, 2013, Officer Patty Gonzalez was presented the prestigious William “Bill” Parrillo Award by the Parrillo family, for her dedicated service and commitment to the students at Norman S. Edelcup SIB K-8 School. Officer Gonzalez is completing her 3rd year as School Liaison Officer, representing the union between the SIB Police Department and the school. To say she has taken her assignment to another level would be an understatement.
Officer Gonzalez combined a D.A.R.E. instructional program with a personal safety program for students of all ages. “It teaches students how to protect themselves in all areas, not just in drug prevention.” Even the littlest of our students can learn the basics of safety including name, phone number, address and emergency contact information.
The Parrillo Award is sponsored in part by Mr. Richard Parrillo and family of the United Auto Insurance Company (UAIC). The award is named in honor of former Federal Prosecutor “Bill” Parrillo, who as tough as he was in the courtroom was gentle, loving and supportive of youth and programs designed to help kids. Officer Gonzalez fit the mold perfectly to be honored based on criteria. She is firm but fair, tough but understanding and has only the best interest of the child in mind.
Also present for the award presentation was Sergeant Eddy Santiago, a past recipient of the award, along with Chief Fred Maas of the SIBPD. “We are all very proud of the recognition given to Officer Gonzalez. It is well deserved as she takes her job very seriously. Once again, the Sunny Isles Beach Police Department is held in a positive light through the efforts of a caring and dedicated officer,” said Chief Fred Maas. Congratulations to the school and the officer!
