St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School still is recovering from the jet lag experienced from an extraordinary weekend only seen once a year at its campus.

“Get Set to Jet Set: An Evening in Bali,” the school’s annual dinner, dance and auction fundraiser, took place recently and broke all records.

This year the guests, also known as the passengers, were transported from the Tiger Airlines terminal in Rantz Hall, which held the silent auction, to a Balinese resort on school grounds. It was a sold-out event with more than 450 tickets sold making it one of its best-attended events in its history.

“Our parents are still buzzing about what a magical evening which raised a substantial amount of funds in a very creative and fun way to benefit our children,” said Veronica Sucre, president of the Parents Association. “Incredible auction items such as exotic destinations and our traditional one-of-a-kind Children’s Art, chaired by Katrina Alvarez and Carolina Velis, helped us reach our fundraising goals.”

As the guests arrived into a tent that was transformed into a Bali resort, they were greeted by Shane Battier, former Miami Heat basketball player, and Cynthia Demos, Emmy Award-winning journalist and a St. Thomas alum, which did a phenomenal job creating enthusiasm and generating interest in the live auction.

“Shane and Cynthia are true professionals,” said Roberta Meyeringh, director of parent relations. “We appreciate their participation and value them as members of our community.”

Event chairs included Daisy Blanchard, Jeannie Coulson, Maria Gutierrez, Erika White, Kelly Vedrani, Alexandra von Romondt and Amanda Thompson. The evening’s major sponsor was City National Bank/Jorge and Melinda Gonzalez. Other sponsors included Kendall Regional and Mercy Hospital/Lesli and Michael Joseph; Merrill Lynch/Gutierrez, Gutierrez, and Sonville; BACARDI USA; Colonial Press/ Ximena and Jorge Gomez; Crown Wine & Spirits; Original Impressions, and Quirch Foods.

“Our sponsors, our parents, our teachers, and incredible in-kind support is what always makes this event so successful,” Sucre concluded.

“There is no place like St. Thomas in terms of the entire school community coming out in support of an immensely important cause, and our ability to have a fantastic time while doing it.”
