The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued new Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Broward County became effective on August 18th, 2014. Broward County and the 31 cities, including City of West Park, in Broward County have received the finalized flood maps from FEMA and have adopted them.
The finalized maps will now be used by insurance companies for flood insurance purposes and the updated base flood elevations must be used for all new construction and substantial improvements to existing construction. The computed elevation to which floodwater is anticipated to rise during the base flood. Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) are shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and on the flood profiles. The BFE is the regulatory requirement for the elevation or flood-proofing of structures. The relationship between the BFE and a structure’s elevation determines the flood insurance premium.
New flood maps are needed due to the dynamic nature of flood hazard conditions, the availability of updated elevation data, improved technology for identifying flood hazards and to account for developments that can affect flood zone boundaries. The new digital flood maps will help the community officials and citizens be better prepared for flood hazards for unincorporated Broward County and Broward’s 31 municipalities located within them.
The updated flood maps, after adoption, will be used for:
• determining flood insurance purchase requirements.
• determining flood insurance rates.
• establishing minimum finished floor elevations for new construction and substantial improvements to existing structures.
By adopting the new flood maps, the City is assured that FEMA will offer assistance during emergencies and provide flood insurance coverage for our residents. Homeowners and business owners are encouraged to view FEMA’s new flood maps online by using an interactive tool.
