Broward MPO and Broward County to Host Second Round of Broward Safety Action Plan Public Workshops in February

Effort aims to prevent traffic fatalities and serious injuries on Broward County roadways

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Broward County will host a second round of Broward Safety Action Plan (BSAP) public workshops during the month of February. These workshops will provide residents with an opportunity to review conceptual designs and offer feedback on critical safety measures for some of the county’s most dangerous streets.

“Community education and input is vital to the success of the Broward Safety Action Plan,” said Greg Stuart, executive director of the Broward MPO. “Working in collaboration with Broward County and by engaging residents, we can identify effective strategies and implement meaningful changes that will save lives and make our streets safer for everyone.”

The BSAP initiative emphasizes collaboration between community members, local leaders, and transportation experts. By participating in these workshops, residents can directly influence the development of safer streets for all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, drivers, and transit riders.

Broward County continues to face significant challenges with traffic safety. The county’s fatality rate stands at 14.8 per 100,000 people which is more than five times higher than New York City and twice as deadly as Chicago. The BSAP addresses these challenges by focusing on targeted analysis and solutions to improve safety on priority corridors across Broward County.

The February workshops are designed to educate and engage the public through materials such as corridor concept designs, safety countermeasures, and equity and safety analyses. Each session will include a brief presentation, an open house for feedback, and opportunities to engage directly with the BSAP team. Attendees will also have the chance to sign a safety pledge, explore an interactive map, and receive complimentary safety items, such as bike lights, bracelets or bags.

A Night at The Sir John’s Knight Beat with the Idyllic Funk Band.

Step into the vibrant legacy of Sir John’s Knight Beat, transported through a portal of timeless jazz hits performed by the Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center Artist In Residence, Idyllic Funk Band. Once a cornerstone of Miami’s Black cultural scene and a legendary stop on the Chitlin’ Circuit, Sir John’s—also known as The Lord Calvert—was featured in The Greenbook, the essential guide for African American travelers. Idyllic Funk’s reprise of A Night At The Sir John’s is more than just a performance; it’s a celebration of the sounds and spirit that defined an unforgettable era. So grab your friends, lace up your dancing shoes, and get ready for a night to remember!

The Chitlin’ Circuit was a network of performance spaces that provided crucial platforms for African American musicians and artists during the Jim Crow era. It played a transformative role in shaping genres like jazz, blues, soul, and R&B. Influential jazz greats graced its stages, with the music serving as a powerful reflection of the dynamic and evolving Black communities of the time.

But jazz on the Chitlin’ Circuit was more than just entertainment; it was a cultural force intertwined with the social and political shifts of the era. The sounds emerging from these venues blended soulful innovation with bold experimentation, from hard bop to modal jazz, soul-jazz, and jazz fusion. These performances were not just artistic expressions; they were a resonant voice for the Black community, capturing both its struggles and triumphs

    TRI-RAIL Surpasses 4 Million Rides In 2024

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA), operator of Tri-Rail, has reported that the train system served 4.4 million riders in calendar year 2024, marking the first time since 2019 that ridership has exceeded 4 million in a single year. Between 2012 and 2019, Tri-Rail consistently surpassed 4 million annual rides with ridership growing by 1% year-over-year during that period, culminating in its highest ridership year in 2019.

Tri-Rail’s full ridership recovery was reported last year in March 2024, with an average of 15,000 weekday rides and 8,000 weekend rides that month. By the end of 2024, the system maintained a solid average of 14,000 weekday and 7,000 weekend rides, including setting a new Saturday ridership record of 10,129 trips on February 24, 2024.

“We are thrilled to see a strong resurgence in ridership as more people discover the convenience Tri-Rail offers,” said Commissioner Marci Woodward, SFRTA Governing Board Chair. “We aspire to continue to break our own records, and more importantly, to establish a service that enhances the rider experience and strengthens the region’s mobility.”

Tri-Rail services were expanded to serve downtown Miami in January 2024, adding MiamiCentral Station as an additional stop for the train system. Tri-Rail’s schedule was further enhanced in the summer to include weekday express train service for MiamiCentral and a midnight train out of Miami Airport Station. The system improved its on-time performance to 93.6% in December 2024, marking the first time in over a year to exceed 90%.

In addition to the enhanced train schedule, Tri-Rail provided special train service for notable events throughout 2024, including the Ultra Music Festival, Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour, and the Miami New Year’s Ever celebration.

“We have set new goals to make sure we are doing all we can to provide a better customer experience and bring more people to use the train,” added Commissioner Woodward. “Opening service in downtown Miami was a significant achievement, and we will keep working closely with our partners to provide safe, convenient, and efficient transportation that meets the needs of the region.”

    About Leo Goodwin Foundation

The Leo Goodwin Foundation, a charitable foundation based in Broward County, was established by Leo Goodwin Sr. and Jr. It was the Goodwin family that founded GEICO Insurance Company. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the lives of all of those who live in the community. Their work began with the youngest and most vulnerable in the community. Their initial investments supported the efforts of Kids In Distress; the Boys and Girls Clubs; PACE Center for Girls; SOS Children’s Villages and many others whose primary focus was on the kids. The Trustees of the Foundation quickly saw the importance of education and made a significant commitment to Nova Southeastern University. The Goodwin name prominently appears throughout Nova’s Davie campus. In addition, the Foundation funds and distributes scholarships each year to numerous deserving students at Nova Law School and Broward College. The Leo Goodwin Foundation has also sought to tackle some of the more immediate problems facing the community, including mental health issues, with a major grant to Henderson Behavioral Health; and homeless issues, with initial capital funding and ongoing commitments to Broward Partnership for the Homeless. The Trustees are also proud of the Foundation’s commitment to the Arts, including funding for the Broward Performing Arts Center; The Museum of Discovery and Science; and Young at Art, Children’s Museum. It is the hope of the Foundation that its efforts will benefit the community as a whole and their positioning line, “By Doing Good, We All Win,” is fulfilled. Week 3 of the preseason marks the final tune-up before the regular season kicks off one week from Friday. Tonight, we witnessed the resurgence of the long ball and a noticeable improvement in defense. Although the bats were relatively silent, managing just six hits over 4.5 innings, half of those hits cleared the fences. All three home runs came off the pitching of Alex Giroux, who has been in the discussions to be considered as the mid-week starter. Following tonight’s performance, it could be back to the pitching charts.

Alex Giroux, who had been enjoying a solid preseason until tonight, faced a major setback as his teammates decisively took the ball deep on him, hitting three home runs. Each of these home runs was hit with authority to various parts of the field, having no doubt that they were destined to leave the yard. The first blast occurred in the second inning when Max Galvin reached first base after a walk with one out. Derek Williams launched a powerful shot that slammed into the lamppost a third of the way up in left field. Just an inning later, Fabio Peralta also sent a ball soaring, and, much like Derek’s, it was clear it was gone the moment it left the bat. The final home run came swiftly in the next inning from Daniel Cuvet, delivering a crushing blow that fans had been eagerly anticipating.

While Alex distributed home runs, his counterpart, Brixton Lofgren, complemented his performance with three singles; only one resulted in a run. This occurred in the second inning after an opening error by Jake Ogden. That error eventually led to a run three batters later when Michael Torres drove Todd Hudson home with an RBI single. The other two singles were not capitalized on. In the first inning, Dorian Gonzalez reached base with a bunt single but did not advance further. The other single came in the third inning with one out by Jake Ogden, who, like Dorian earlier, was stranded at first base.

Ryan Ashford took the mound in the 4th inning to replace Brixton and efficiently faced three batters, all of whom grounded out. This outing showcased one of his stronger performances, despite its brevity.

Not much to garner from tonight’s scrimmage. With just 4.5 innings to report, the offense did not show much other than the three HRs, the bunt single by Dorian, and a defensive DP executed by Adrian Areizaga, who was playing SS and catching Nolan Johnson flat-footed, running from first, thinking the ball was out of reach of Adrian’s glove. Nolan was on second before he realized his error, but he was unable to make it back to first.

One more scrimmage left to be played before the Alumni take to the field Saturday night. Friday is scheduled for 9 innings starting at 145PM.
