Dr.-Adam-J.-Rubinstein1Submental Fullness or an excessive amount of fatty deposits under the chin is among the top three most bothersome facial issues that can lead to a diminished self-image. This condition can be caused by aging, weight gain and overall genetics.

Submental fullness, sometimes known as a double chin, or fatty neck, is an increasingly common complaint seen by plastic surgeons. More and more patients are looking for a way to refresh their chin and neck without going under the knife. In fact, in a recent survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery over two thirds of people surveyed were bothered by submental fullness.

Historically, the only ways to get rid of the condition was to employ invasive procedures such as submental liposuction. On the horizon is a new potential solution that is non-invasive. Kythera Biopharmaceuticals is on the forefront of releasing ATX-101, an injectable that is meant to melt the fat under the chin.

For Dr. Adam Rubinstein, a board certified plastic surgeon based in Miami FL, there are many options when treating of submental. Dr. Rubinstein explains, “Most people have a little bit of excess fat under their chin, some more than others. Thankfully, we already have a wide variety of choices to bring back a tight, sleek jaw line and chin. And now with ATX-101 we may have the easiest method yet.”

ATX-101 may mean far less downtime for patients and better results. “We are very excited at the prospect of using an injection to improve excess submental fat. ATX-101 could very well do for submental fat what Botox did for frown lines.”

Dr. Adam J. Rubinstein is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He serves on the editorial board for the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal, and is currently at work on his first book, Cut To The Chase: A No-Nonsense Guide To Cosmetic Treatments and Procedures. Dr. Rubinstein has been named as one of America’s Top Plastic Surgeons every year since 2007, and has appeared on NBC, ABC, Fox News and many other news outlets.
