Whigham Elementary picks two ‘Teachers of the Year’Two teachers at Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary School in Cutler Bay recently were chosen by their peers as “Teachers of the Year” and will go on to represent the school in the district competition.

Jacqueline M. Ferguson, a veteran of the school system for the past 22 years currently teaching fifth grade Reading and Language Arts at Whigham, was selected as Teacher of the Year. A long time Cutler Bay resident, she said she is appreciative of the recognition.

“I was extremely honored to have been chosen as Teacher of the Year from a staff of exemplary teachers,” Ferguson said. “This moment will mark one of my greatest accomplishments as an educator. Promoting a love for learning will always remain paramount as I strive to do the best for my students.”

Sasha Gutierrez, who has been teaching for the past three years and currently is teaching fourth grade students in the Reading, Language Arts and Writing Department at Whigham, was selected at “Rookie Teacher of the Year” at the school. She was equally pleased about being honored. “I am extremely grateful to have been chosen as ‘Rookie Teacher of the Year’ to represent Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary School,” Gutierrez said.

“I continue to learn new strategies everyday with my students as well as how to incorporate each student’s learning style.”

The awards were presented on Feb. 5 at a dinner reception at the Doubletree Hotel. The awards were given to both recipients prior to the reception.

Fourth grade teacher Marilyn Horne said she agreed with the selection and is looking forward to seeing the teachers at the district level.

“I’m so pleased that our school is being represented by two such outstanding teachers,” Horne said.
