Tropical Audubon Society will transform its Steinberg Nature Center grounds on Saturday, March 21st as it celebrates International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD), featuring an array of engaging, educational activities for participants of all ages. IMBD marks the migration of nearly 350 species of migratory birds between nesting habitats in North America and non-breeding grounds in the Caribbean, Latin America and Mexico.
Although South Florida’s open green spaces are increasingly under threat, the region remains a prime refueling station for birds migrating between seasons on the north/south flyways — from North America and Canada, to the tip of South America and points in between. With this biannual “movement” already taking flight, TAS’s third annual IMBD festival will focus on those species that stop over with us, and will illustrate South Florida’s role in bird conservation worldwide. Our area’s Caribbean/Latin American residents can also learn more about their home-country birds as they recharge here before flying north for summer.
Packed with interactive games and prizes, and led by a host of bird experts, the IMBD festival makes for a rewarding afternoon for families with young children, and for friends looking for something unique and meaningful to do on the first weekend day of Spring. Attendees will learn why bird conservation is crucial, and how taking the right steps to facilitate a welcoming rest stop in our own yards can enhance overall quality of life in South Florida. In addition to planned festivities, participants can explore the TAS campus, which includes a native pineland hammock, the Steinberg Nature Center and the historic Doc Thomas House, recently named to The National Register of Historic Places.
International Migratory Bird Day is free and open to the public, and will take place from noon until 4 p.m.
Tropical Audubon Society is located 2 blocks east of the South Miami business district at 5530 Sunset Drive.
