The Miami Christian School basketball team took the sports spotlight in mid-February, winning the State 2A Championship for the third time in the school’s history with a 71-44 triumph over Agape Christian School of Orlando Feb. 25.The Victors advanced to the final in Lakeland with a 95-70 victory over Sarasota Christian Feb. 24. Regional wins over Calusa Prep 47-39 and Boca Raton Grandview 90-73 opened the way for the Victors first state championship since 2002.
Spirit Week activities included announcing the Homecoming Queen and Princesses chosen by their peers. Reigning Queen Melissa Gonzalez (2014) returned to crown Janellene Lopez as 2015 Queen during halftime of the Homecoming basketball game. Others in the full court included King Anthony Potestad; Senior Prince and Princess,Homero Costas-Zuniga and Elizabeth Rosillo; and Senior Prince and Princess, Anthony Fernandez and Yosela Noriega.
David Lopez (’14) recently dropped by to give moral support to the Victors’ Baseball Team and help cheer them on to victory. David currently plays first base at St.Thomas University where he attends on full scholarship.
On the academic front, Middle and High School Social Science students recently held their Expo in the MCS gymnasium, portraying various notable African American activists, entertainers, authors and athletes. During the photo ops, students often had their “coach,”“publicist,”,“ handler,”“agent,” etc. posing with them.The fun educational day was orchestrated by Kiya Cordeau and Greys Buritrago who deserve the applause for brings staging such a successful event.
Remy Dou, MCS Physics Instructor and Albert Einstein Fellow 2011-2013, was awarded a 2015 Air Force Association Educator Grant, established to assist educators bring knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) into the nation’s classrooms. Dou will likely use the grant to pursue Physics classroom instruction on model rocketry.
In other news, Chef Arthur of Real Food Academy visited MCS on Feb. 13 during an in-house field trip for elementary students. Participants made their own pizzas, then fruit kabobs for a healthy dessert. Chef Arthur led an attentive group of students in a discussion involving choices between natural and processed foods, noting the negatives of prolonged processed food diets, e. g., obesity and chronic health problems.
Finally, after training for 18 weeks, MCS Teacher Joanna Clark and husband, Gary, participated in the Miami Marathon/ Half Marathon to raise funds for World Vision’s comprehensive and sustainable water projects throughout Africa. These projects lead to better health and allow children to attend school instead of fetching water. Clark’s team, the Bridge Runners, was one of the top three fundraisers of all participating.
