Incumbent Mayor Jim Cason is running for reelection in the City of Coral Gables elections on Apr. 14. He has served since 2011. Cason is a longtime Florida resident — married for 41 years to his wife, Carmen, with two grown sons and five grandchildren.
A Fulbright Scholar and a graduate of Dartmouth College, Johns Hopkins University and the National War College, Cason is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer with more than 40 years of national and international public service, including extensive experience in Latin America.
He served as U.S. Ambassador to Paraguay; Chief of Mission, U.S. Interests Section in Havana, Cuba; Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassies in Honduras and Jamaica; political advisor to the Commander of NATO’s Supreme Allied Command, Atlantic; Director of Regional Affairs, U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, and in U.S. embassies in Portugal, Italy, El Salvador, Panama, Uruguay, Bolivia and Venezuela. He has received numerous awards.
When asked what he would do during his first 100 days of a new term in office, Cason responded:
“It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Coral Gables as their mayor and I ratify my commitment to my vision: Coral Gables First! Next Apr. 14 with your vote we can continue on the path to growth, fiscal integrity and improving quality of life while reducing the millage rate, as we have done for the past four years.
“As mayor of the City Beautiful I will continue serving as part of a city commission I praise for its unity and positive work in favor of the residents. Together we will move forward the agenda of continuous improvements to the infrastructure and the quality of life in Coral Gables.
“I will work with the commission to ensure the continuity of the important projects such as the redevelopment of the business district, infrastructure improvements, repair of residential sidewalks and beautification. We will continue to increase our city’s reserves beyond the $30 million.
“During the first 100 days of my third term as mayor I will support and continue to provide the Coral Gables Police Department with the resources it needs to keep Coral Gables as one of the safest cities in Florida. I will continue to monitor pension reform, the neighborhood renaissance program and provide leadership to our strong business development drive to attract new businesses and jobs to Coral Gables.
“Give me five minutes of your time in casting your ballot and I will give you two more years of dedication to the excellence of our 90-years-young City Beautiful.”
