Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, and community leaders gathered at Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical Collegetoday for a bond project ribbon-cutting event resulting from the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The GOB will be used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the district, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
The Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College renovation project was funded in Year 1 of the GOB program for approximately $2.5 million. It included exterior stucco repair and painting, installation of new covered walkway at the bus drop-off area, replacement of flooring in auditorium and various other selected areas, upgrade of the fire alarm and security systems and installation of new classroom technology. The project architect was M. C. Harry & Associates, Inc. and the contractor was Link Construction Group Inc., a firm certified as M/WBE with the district. The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. A second GOB project, funded in 2016-2017 for approximately $5 million will complete the renovation of the campus.
