“Ditch the workout; join the party,” the mantra of the globally popular dance-fitness phenomena “Zumba” is also the life changing rally for its counterpart “Zumba Gold,” a modified version of the exercise class for active older adults.
“Zumba Gold” classes mingle fun and energetic music with lower impact exercise movements and easy-to-follow pacing. The specialized exercises are aimed at improving balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health, and muscle conditioning.
The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department as a community leader for health and fitness has announced that it has added new Zumba Gold classes, as part of its lineup of free “Active Older Adults” recreational programming, for residents age 55 and older.
Classes are free of charge through Miami-Dade Parks Active Older Adults partner Chen Neighborhood Medical Centers. Advance registration is required as space is limited.
Locally, the program is taking place at Continental Park Community Center, 10000 SW 82 Ave. (305-274-9666), 7-8 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Classes are led by certified fitness instructors and are taught in a group setting, which offers participants the opportunity to meet others who enjoy staying fit, so they can stay motivated about exercising regularly.
Started in 2013, Miami-Dade County Parks’ Active Older Adults Program is designed to help older adults improve their well-being by consistently staying physically active. The program is offered at parks throughout the county.
