Miami Christian School instills a giving spirit in its students, embodied throughout MCS by “Operation Christmas Child” with the school’s delivery of 93 boxes to bless children in many parts of the world. Students were asked to pray for those receiving gifts. Special congratulations go to the Sixth Grade class, donors of the most boxes.
The Christmas season also arrived the first week of December with performances by the Fine Arts Department, highlighting their choral and instrumental skills. Elementary students re-enacted the Christmas story with choral and band selections rounding out the program.
On the academic front, the National and Junior National Honor Societies inducted students chosen by the faculty based on their academics, service and leadership. Newest inductees: Chrystal Castillo, Jacqueline Gonzalez, Bryant Pineda, Rachel Ramos, Christine Rosillo and Andres Valdes (High School); Sharon Berkley, Ana Maria Giraldo Sanchez, Carlos Giraldo Sanchez, Daznee Huertas and Daniel Victores (Middle School).
Also headlining the academic scene: MCS students once again participated in “The Hour of Code,” a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries with the goal of having every student spend at least one hour doing computer programming in celebration of Computer Science Education Week. Three coding project choices for 2015 were Mine Craft, Star Wars and Frozen. Achievement certificates for completing up to 15 progressive coding levels, each more difficult than the last, were awarded. Juan David Quinones, Lucia Castellanos, Damian Ponce, Justin Marono and Bryant Pineda from the Robotics Engineering Class were on hand to help students with their coding.
In alumni news, Regina Bernadin (’00) Valedictorian, returned to MCS to address students in a special assembly, her experience at Miami Christian and her pursuit of post-secondary education at UM for her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, as well as Nova Southern for her Doctorate in Conflict Resolution to be completed in 2016. She discussed her personal life choices leading to her current success, motivating listeners to achieve their fullest potential.
Regina, now Program Manager for the International Refugee Center’s Miami staff, was formerly with Florida’s Department of Children and Families, serving as its Refugee Services first statewide Human Trafficking Coordinator. As coordinator, she was responsible for facilitating and addressing human trafficking initiatives while developing and implementing human trafficking curriculum and trainings. She also provided technical assistance to the department and other local, national and international organizations and governments.
