Coral Reef High School won the seventh annual Miami Heat Black History Month Challenge presented by PepsiCo on Monday, Feb. 29, at the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Coral Reef’s team defeated Hollywood Hills High School in this event. Coral Reef’s Trivia Team members were Asiah Bellinger, Justin Brunt, Kirnesha Facey, Lemoyne Jones, Amber Robinson and Delbert Sutton.
The Miami Heat Black History Month Challenge is a game show-style competition where team members from each school tests their knowledge of African-American history, with the winning school eaarning a $4,000 grant and a Heat prize pack. The runnerup will received a $500 grant. After the competition, both schools were treated to a pizza party donated by Papa John’s Pizza, official pizza partner of the Miami Heat.
Two Heat legends, Alonzo Mourning and Glen Rice, participated in the competition and served as captains for their respective team. The event emceed by Heat television host and courtside reporter Jason Jackson.
“The Miami Heat organization has been a wonderful partner with Miami-Dade County Public Schools,” said schools superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “We’re thrilled that Coral Reef Senior High students had the opportunity to participate in the Heat’s annual Black History Month Challenge, demonstrating their breadth of knowledge and appreciation for the many contributions of African-Americans.”
This event is part of the Heat’s ongoing celebration of Black History Month, which is also sponsored by PepsiCo. Throughout the month of February, the HEAT recognized notable achievements of various African-Americans who have helped change the course of history with their contributions in sports, literature, the arts, the community, education, music and the military. Their accomplishments were featured during Heat broadcasts, online at Heat.com, as well as in-arena and in print in Tipoff magazine during Heat home games.
Vicky Martinez, activities director; Khary Pestina, Trivia Team’s coach, and Dawn Reeves, club sponsor, all worked in preparing the students for this competition.
