Lets Celebrate the Environment

We have come to of our mild winter and as of March 20, we began the Spring Season. The month of April does not have many hol- idays but there is one very important celebration. National Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22. This annual day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The concept of Earth Day was established in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. On March 21, 1970, a sanctioned Proclamation was signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations.

On April 22, 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day. Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. While the first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. April 22 corresponds to spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. We recognize that we are guilty of being cruel to our environment, bringing destruction to our home and to our own living place. We have interrupted the balance of the ecosystem provided by nature. With our obsession with industrialization, we have forgotten our living partners, our natural friends, and the bounties that nature has provided for us. Now as a result we have to admit that 2015 was the hottest year to date, the airway diseases have increased rapidly and epidemics have become frequent while the heat stroke cases have become a routine. These are all the gifts of bizarre global changes brought by us.

Climatologists have warned that if no appropriate action is taken, these changes will become irreversible. We have not only become dangerous to ourselves but have also risked the existence of our animal friends. They play a significant role in maintaining the balance of life. The list of the endangered species is on the rise. The recent animal species on the verge of extinction is the Java Tiger; others include the Indus Dolphin, Snow Leopard, Giant Panda and Musk Deer to name a few. They are being killed vicariously by choking, lack of food, and habitat, and various diseases.

West park joins in the effort to bring awareness to this critical situation by celebrating EARTH DAY in the city annually. We encourage you to join us on Saturday, April 23 2016 at our Earth Day Recycling Fair and Free Fresh Foods Distribution Event at McTyre Park 3501 SW 56 Avenue as we show our support in making the environment safe for all.
