Officially, the first day of summer is Monday, June 20, but Palmetto Bay is getting a head start with a number of summertime programs and special events, beginning soon.
First up is something called End of School Summer Splash on Thursday, June 9, at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152 St. Taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. the event is intended to be a treat for kids fresh out of school featuring water slides, games, music, water balloons and “fun foods.”
Then the Parks and Recreation Department will host its Camp Palmetto Bay summer camp at Coral Reef Park and Coral Reef Elementary School from June 13 to Aug. 5, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This is for ages 5 to 12 and online registration already has begun. The fee per week is $135, which includes snacks and fieldtrips.
There’s also a Tennis Summer Camp, aimed for beginner to intermediate levels, taking place at Coral Reef Park from June 13 to Aug. 19.
This is for ages 5 to 17. Online registration has begun and the fee per week for a half-day (9 a.m.-noon) program is $115; a full day (9 a.m.-3 p.m.) is $175; extended day (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) is $225.
To promote family recreation, the village will hosts its inaugural Father’s Day BBQ & Car Show at Thalatta Estate Park on Sunday, June 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The afternoon program is aimed at the whole family and is designed to treat Dad to a very special event at one of Palmetto Bay’s most historic and scenic parks overlooking Biscayne Bay.
Activities for the entire family include barbecue, a car show, Kayak Adventures, PhotoBooth, the Home Depot Kid’s Craft Station, Scavenger Hunt, face painting/balloon artists, miniature golf, a live eight-piece band/deejay and much more.
Tickets may be purchased online at www.123contactform.com/form-1956353/. Tickets are $15 per person and $5 for children 10 and under. The ticket includes food/beverage and all advertised event activities. Tickets are limited. Parking is free and will be located at the Deering Point C-100 Parking Lot (north of Thalatta Estate Park on Old Cutler).
Overflow parking will be available at the north lot inside the Village Center. Palmetto Bay’s iBus will be available to shuttle families between
Thalatta Estate Park and the Village Center. Parking will not be available inside Thalatta Estate Park, as this area is reserved for the Car Show sponsored by Benefits Car Show. Sign up for the kayak adventure the day of the event, if interested.
Event organizers recommend that you bring your camera. Also don’t forget your lawn chairs, blankets, and kits for a relaxing day on the lawn as you enjoy barbecue and music. No pets, canopies, EZ-Up 10×10 tents or coolers will be permitted.
