Students get a dose of fun, learning on STEM Saturdays

Students get a dose of fun, learning on STEM SaturdaysPOAH Communities Cutler Manor, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. PDO Family Strengthening Committee, ASCEND, and Florida International University recently partnered to bring STEM Saturdays to the Minds In Training students. Along with incorporating literacy throughout the year, the program has started focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The FIU medical students (MAPS – Minority Association of Premedical Students) discussed, demonstrated, and assisted the children, ranging in age from 5 to 18, with extracting DNA from Kiwi and constructing a model of a double helix made out of candy. The program was made possible by community center resident service manager Shelby W. Turner, in collaboration with Dr. Cheryl Holder of Florida International University and the James Wilson Bridges, MD, Medical Society Inc. Each child received a STEM Saturday T-shirt provided by POAH Communities.
