Donated Cameras Bring New Experience to Minority Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center Summer CampPublic reception to be held at the HistoryMiami Museum on Sunday, April 2 at 1:00pm showcasing photos by elementary and middle school students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center
Students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center (MSDBNC) and their families are attending an opening gallery reception this Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm in the HistoryMiami Museum. The gallery will showcase photos by kids ages 8-12 from the Miami Children’s Initiative in Liberty City and the START Program of West Coconut Grove. The photos were taken this summer during MSDBNC’s month long “Summer by the Sea” camp at Crandon Park, Key Biscayne. The collection is inspired by the MSDBNC mission to reinforce the community’s connection to the environment and encourage the next generation to continue to conserve the world around them. Through a generous donation of digital cameras from the Center for Visual Communication (CVC), the camp’s photo program was developed to introduce minority students to the basics of photography and give them a way to express the environmentally friendly ideas inspired by camp naturalists. Students were taught about composition, lighting and camera technique while hunting for pictures with their own creative eyes and unique perspective. On the collaboration between the MSDBNC and the CVC, CVC director Barry Fellman said, “It is one thing to read a book or to hear about these natural areas, but our camp programs have shown that to be in nature, experience and feel it first hand, and to tell stories visually is a richer and more meaningful experience.”
The student showcase is on display in the HistoryMiami Museum community gallery from April 2 to April 30.
