Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ Board of Directors has announced $2,205,662 in Major, Tau, All Region and ACOR Grant awards.
Common Good Initiative investments benefitting the health and wellness of underserved and marginalized people in Overtown also were released. A total of over $6 million in grants were awarded in the three regions in which Allegany Franciscan Ministries serves — Miami-Dade; Palm Beach (Martin, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties), and Tampa Bay (Hillsborough and Pinellas counties) in FY17.

Common Good Initiative Investments
Twenty organizations were awarded over $1 million for the Common Good Initiative in Overtown, including $645,000 to Catalyst Miami; $250,000 to van Vark Enterprises, and $40,000 to Catholic Volunteers in Florida. An additional $100,000 was committed for the Fellowship for the Common Good, and multiple smaller investments were made.

Through the Common Good Initiative, Overtown’s residents and stakeholders have identified their most important priorities as: all residents will have access to high quality employment; all community youth will have access to affordable, high quality, youth development opportunities; all residents and organizations will have the information and resources to work together and exercise their power for the good of the community. The FY17 investments support strategies to address these priorities.
Major Grants
Major Grant FY17 commitments in Miami-Dade total $527,750 and include: $170,000 to Catholic Charities Legal Services Archdiocese of Miami; $60,000 to Epilepsy Foundation of Florida; $149,750 to Miami Baptist Association, fiscal agent for Good News Care Center, and $148,000 to WeCount!.
Major Grants are closely aligned with Allegany Franciscan Ministries’ focus to help underserved and marginalized populations increase their access to healthcare and
improve their health by eliminating barriers to health, advocating for health reform and providing health navigation and care coordination. Major Grants are awarded annually for
up to a two-year period, generally through a single, competitive open grant cycle.
Tau Grants
Twelve Miami-Dade organizations shared a total of $113,000 in Tau Grant funds to increase access to healthcare and improve the health status for underserved and marginalized populations. Tau Grants are awarded to small and midsized local nonprofit organizations to assist with organizational or program needs that are limited in time and scope. Grants are awarded through two cycles annually and range up to $10,000.
All Region Grants
Eight All Region Fund grant recommendations were awarded totaling $225,000, for FY17. This year’s All Region Fund grants supported statewide efforts focused on health care and community engagement and philanthropic partnerships, as well as international disaster recovery.
Allegany Community Out Reach Grants (ACOR)
Twenty ACOR Grants totaling $252,750 were approved for FY17. ACOR Grants are unique, requiring an affiliation with the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany; including ministries across the U.S. and in Jamaica and Brazil. There are two grant cycles each year.
