Pet facial recognition technology is another way to help reunite families with pets lost during Irma

Finding RoverFinding Rover and Miami-Dade Animal Services (Animal Services) can help reunite families that lost their pets due to Hurricane Irma using innovative facial recognition technology. This vital service is completely free and can be accessed with a mobile phone or computer which makes the pet instantly searchable.

“Our partnership with Finding Rover is a key role in helping us reunite pets and families after the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma,” said Alex Muñoz, director of Animal Services. “By utilizing this groundbreaking tool, it will be an incredible asset for our rescue and relief efforts in the community.”

How it works: If you have a lost pet, upload a photo on http://findingrover.com or using the Finding Rover mobile app. Finding Rover will then show pets with matching characteristics that have been reported lost. If you lose your pet and they are not registered on Finding Rover, you can still search for your pet by clicking “Help for IRMA” on Finding Rover’s website.

Finding Rover’s database of pets is integrated into their mobile app, so users who download the app and register their pets can then search for found animals who may currently be at the Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center.

“A dog or cat is a beloved family member, and if he or she goes missing, it can be devastating to everyone involved, especially in times of disasters,” said John Polimeno, CEO and founder of Finding Rover. “We want to do everything we can to safeguard our dogs and cats from being lost forever. Registering a dog or cat in Finding Rover is another step all owners should take to further protect their cherished pet.”

In addition to registering your pet on Finding Rover, pet owners should take additional measures to find their pets:

  • Search for your pet on Animal Services’ website.
  • If your pet is microchipped, register or update the registration on your pet’s microchip immediately.

Finding Rover is currently available at http://findingrover.com at no charge on both iOS and Android devices.
