The Brother Rice Honors Academy, the 6-7-8 Catholic middle school located on the campus of Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School, 4949 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, 33137, is currently accepting applications for the 2011/2012 academic year. Space is limited and applicants should be currently performing at or above grade level.
Archbishop Curley Notre Dame High School is easily accessible via the Julia Tuttle Causeway and I-95 providing the perfect drop-off point for parents working within Miami’s core, the Beaches, and surrounding areas.
From the founding of Archbishop Curley High School and Notre Dame Academy in 1953-54 and through their eventual merger in 1981, ACND has been enriched by the educational traditions and charism of the Priests of the Archdiocese of St. Augustine and Miami, by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Brothers of the Holy Cross. Since 1975 the Archdiocese of Miami has entrusted the administration of the school to the Congregation of Christian Brothers.
The Academy’s mission is to foster enriched learning within an enhanced curriculum that includes learning a musical instrument, world language, and exposing students to cultural, athletic, and community service opportunities.
The curriculum, while based on the Florida Sunshine Standards, is shaped to respond to the unique interests and capacity of each student. Enrichment rather than acceleration is the guiding principle. Students both individually and in small groups are encouraged to explore subjects in greater depth and to seek unique applications of what they are learning.
Intended as an enriched transition into the Catholic school system, the curriculum features:
· An extended school day in which students are encouraged to develop skills in at least one other world language, to learn a musical instrument and to participate in community service projects.
· Individualized programming and small group engagement.
· Advanced level courses in mathematics, science and languages.
· The full resources of the ACND Prep campus and activities (including: music, art studio, speech and debate, journalism, cross country, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, baseball, softball tennis, track and field).
Individually designed programs offer a mix of formal classes, small and large group presentations, research work in the library and media center, and a daily period reserved simply for reading. Time is provided for a leisurely, healthful, community lunch on the patio or in the school gardens. Afternoon classes conclude with announcements and a blessing. During the last hour of the day students participate in a variety of cultural and athletic activities.
The Academy will hold two open houses for prospective families on Friday, March 4, 2011 and Friday, April 1, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The scholars and faculty of the Brother Rice Honors Academy will welcome the guests, offer a guided tour of the Academy facilities, provide an experience of a typical day, and respond to questions concerning the enriched educational program.
Pre-registration for the visit is required so that appropriate preparations can be made for the guest students and their parents. Should these dates or times not prove convenient, other arrangements can be made.
