Angel Fraser-Logan Dance Company (AFLDC), winner of the Knight Arts Challenge Miami, a community-wide initiative funding the best ideas for the arts in South Florida, has commissioned Jamar Roberts, Alvin Ailey principal dancer, to choreograph an exclusive piece for her professional dance company.
The House of the Most Loved is an abstract coming of age story told in dance form from the perspective of the youth. It illustrates the carefree energy of being young and growing up in a family surrounded by love, care, imagination and endless possibility. But what happened when these feelings are compromised by loss, dislocation, the passage of time, and the day to day rigors of life?
The House of the Most Loved explores the theme of “growth” — both personal and as a community — and how we can use the beauty, vitality and the memories of our past to help foster hope for our lives moving forward.
The world exclusive production will take place on Thursday, Jan. 18, 7 p.m., at the Olympia Theater, 174 E. Flagler St. There will be a matinee on Jan. 18 that will be performed exclusively for local public, charter and private schools for free, to make dance accessible for all students in South Florida.
This project is made possible by a $50,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its Knight Arts Challenge with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners and sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and the State of Florida and the National Endowment for the Arts.
When Angel Fraser-Logan was awarded the prestigious grant, it allowed her to bring Jamar Roberts to Miami to choreograph a new production and inspire local dancers.
Roberts, an alumni of Dance Empire of Miami, received most of his dance training as a young, aspiring dancer. He grew up in South Florida, pursued dance training at Coral Reef High School and continued at New World School of the Arts, where he was “discovered” by Alvin Ailey.
