Post 98 celebrates American Legion’s 99th birthday, honors first responders

Coral Gables American Legion Post 98 celebrated the 99th birthday of the American Legion on Mar. 10 with a special luncheon gathering and ceremony. The occasion also was an opportunity to present the Post’s annual Police Officer and Firefighter of the Year awards.

Miami Senior High School’s JROTC did the Presentation of Colors and Post Commander Michael Pelton welcomed everyone and introduced the Legion guests. Auxiliary president Nancy Casquarelli introduced the Auxiliary guests. The invocation was given by Chaplain Ed English.

The Police Officer of the Year award was presented to Officer Joel E. Rios of the Coral Gables Police Department. The Firefighter of the Year award went to Driver-Engineer Carlos Eguiluz of the Coral Gables Fire Department. Both men were recognized and honored for their efforts and courage, and were also presented with gift certificates for area restaurants. Their families also attended the event.

Food for the meal was prepared by Legionnaire and Finance Officer Cliff Van Allen and his family. The cake and other desserts were prepared by members of the Auxiliary. Music for the luncheon was provided by The Old Coots Dixieland Band.
