South Miami resident Subrata Basu was recently accepted into the Peace Corps to begin service in Belize, starting March 23 in pre-service training to become as a small business facilitator and business development advisor. Basu, well known among local planning boards and professionals through his service as Assistant Director of Planning for the Planning Department, is scheduled to begin work overseas in June.
“As I wind down my professional career, I want to continue to use my experience and knowledge in improving the quality of life of people around the world by helping to build strong communities,” said Basu.
Basu has an undergraduate degree in architecture along with master’s degrees in Architecture and City and Regional Planning. He will join 318 other Florida residents currently serving in the Peace Corps worldwide, as well as 89 volunteers currently in Belize.
During his first three months abroad, Basu will live with a host family in Belize to transition into the culture and language while providing skills to live on his own during a three-year residency.
“My focus has always been to utilize my education, multi-disciplinary training and my sense of commitment to the fullest extent to make our communities better places to live, work, learn and grow,” said Basu. “I believe that through the Peace Corps, I can continue to make a meaning full difference.”
