Oscar Wilde once famously said, “…And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” To me, summer in South Florida doesn’t really ever feel finished – maybe it’s the heat, humidity, and flip-flops.
But Tax-Free Weekend does an ample job at reminding all of us that a new school year is here. In fact, August 20 begins the first week of public school in Miami-Dade County, otherwise known to parents as “YIPEE!” – and known to us commuters as, “UGH! TRAFFIC!”
One of the best things about the start of the school year is that it gives each student a new opportunity to strive for – and achieve – great success. What does this word “success” mean? Well, to begin this vocabulary lesson, Merriam-Webster says it means, “favorable or desired outcome.” Wow, talk about subjective!
To me, success means setting a goal, working hard, and never, ever giving up. Success also means learning from your mistakes and failures. To be clear, learning from mistakes means not repeating them.
Keys to Success
You can make changes in your life that will ensure success this year. Focus on the big picture and always consider the long haul – that old expression about Rome not being built in a day is very true.
One clear expression of success, in my humble opinion, is giving to others. The “pay it forward” attitude will definitely bring rewards back to you. I can’t think of a better way to achieve success than by donating your time to various civic and philanthropic causes.
I have been active in volunteering for many years and the joy that I feel when I help others can’t be measured. A successful member of any community is one who is willing to step up and help without waiting to be asked.
As we begin this fall season, I am going to work harder than ever to be the most dedicated, enthusiastic resident of this community (without irritating everyone I encounter in the process.)
The Spoils of Success
As I started to do some research for this article, I ran across Florida Statute 14.295. I found it fascinating that in 2001, the Florida legislature passed a law that lauds the benefits of volunteer service to our community. I, personally, have volunteered for Charity Vision, Best Buddies, Gifts in Golf, and Operation Underground Railroad. And there are so many ways that residents can help.
I also found out that if you visit the Pinecrest website and type “community service” in the search bar, you can sign up and assist your village in a number of ways.
By the way, students can earn scholarships through the State of Florida based on their GPA and on the number of community service hours they complete while in high school. Volunteer now! Why wait for another season?
I wish you all the best success in everything you do.
