Members of the renovated Cornerstone Church in Cutler Bay recently collected and donated soap, washclothes, shampoo, toothpaste and other essentials to the residents at Perdue Medical Center.
As a member of the United Methodist Women since 1963 in Cutler Bay, Alice Atwood, 93, still is an active member of the unit of Cornerstone Church. Her daughter, Susan Atwood, has followed her mother by being an active member.
“I’m so very glad that my unit of United Methodist Women is still collecting and donating personal items to the local medical center and school supplies for a very needy school in our area,” Alice Atwood said. “I’m very proud of our United Methodist Women as we are still actively supporting our community.”
Also in the group, Gem Rhodd welcomed the chance to participate.
“Cornerstone United Methodist Women, in collaboration with Cornerstone Church, were happy to spearhead this worthwhile summer project when a need was presented to our group,” Rhodd said.
Besides the toiletry articles for Perdue Medical Center and school supplies for area students, two other women of the group have together made 60 tote bags for Perdue residents to wear around their necks that hold their cell phones and personal items.
Jean Welsh and Gloria Athias of the Cornerstone Craft Group were happy to help.
“This is one way the Cornerstone United Methodist Women and Craft Group can serve the local community,” Welsh said. “This group, along with the tote bags, made over 150 duffel bags for the undocumented children in the children’s home in Cutler Bay and other mission projects for third world countries.” Athias agreed.
“Making little totes for the residents is a labor of love and something I am able to do for our community,” she said.
Cornerstone Church, a United Methodist congregation, was formed in 2015 with the merger of Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church and Perrine-Peters United Methodist Church. The congregation worshiped at the Perrine-Peters site on US1 for the first two and a half years, while Cornerstone Kids Preschool (formerly CRUMK) stayed at the Cutler Ridge site, 20740 Old Cutler Rd. In January 2018, worship and all ministries and programs moved to Cornerstone’s permanent home at the corner of Marlin Road and Old Cutler Road, joining the preschool where it has been for 45-plus years. The educational building, fellowship center, and administrative building have been renovated completely, and within the next year renovation of the sanctuary and construction of a food pantry addition will begin.
