Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Cambridge District of the Year Award, in the large district category.
The Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma is an international curriculum and examination system that emphasizes the value of broad and balanced study. Students who earn the AICE Diploma can be awarded college credit or advanced standing at the university level, including Florida Bright Futures Scholarship.
“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is second to none, accomplishing yet another incredible and powerful achievement,” said superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “The Cambridge Program provides access and equity to learners throughout the district, enabling students in all zip codes to participate in advanced academics.
“I am proud of our students for once again outperforming their peers nationwide and feel indebted to the leaders of our schools, the educators who teach these rigorous courses, and our School Board for having the wisdom to bring forth these educational opportunities,” he added.
The winning district was determined based on examination results and performance in the 2017-18 school year. Cambridge International indicated that M-DCPS is being recognized for its exceptionally strong commitment to expanding access and delivering a high-quality Cambridge education with equally strong performance, as shown by students’ achievements.
Since 2017, Cambridge International has awarded districts that have ranked the highest in both increasing access to the rigor of the Cambridge curriculum and showing commitment to serving economically disadvantaged students, while simultaneously sustaining or improving student performance.
“We congratulate the students, teachers, and administrators in Miami-Dade County on their exceptional level of achievement and are excited to recognize them with the District of the Year award,” said Mark Cavone, regional director for North America of Cambridge International. “We are proud to work with superintendent Carvalho and the Miami-Dade County team to increase student access to rigorous courses of study that allow students to develop critical thinking skills in an engaging academic environment.”
M-DCPS implements 82 Cambridge programs in 70 schools and has expanded access to Cambridge International exams over the past two years by approximately 37 percent. Additionally, M-DCPS exceeded a 70 percent pass rate for the first time, achieving a phenomenal 71 percent pass rate for the academic year 2017-18. Significantly, 357 M-DCPS students received a Cambridge Scholar Award.
