Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) celebrated the opening of its newest exhibition, “Beatriz González: A Retrospective,” with three days consisting of previews and exclusive events that culminated on Friday, Apr. 19, with a book signing with González for her book Diario del Guernica. Diario de una obra sin sentido Mural Para Fábrica Socialista.
The exhibition will remain through Sept. 1.
The celebration for Beatriz González’s exhibition began on Wednesday, Apr. 17, as PAMM held a Museum Circle Opening Reception, a preview exclusively for members that held a friend-level membership or above. Members were able to enjoy cocktails and light bites during the special presentation.
The day after, Apr. 18, featured two separate preview events. During the day, PAMM invited its members to view the exhibition for free, offering a first look at the work of one of the few extant representatives of the so-called “radical women” generation of Latin America.
Later that evening, the opening night preview gave attendees the opportunity to enjoy an engaging conversation with artist Beatriz González; Mari Carmen Ramírez, Wortham curator of Latin American Art and director of International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the MFA Houston, and Tobias Ostrander, PAMM chief curator.
The artist and exhibition co-curators discussed González’s practice and how it helped shape her first large-scale U.S. retrospective. The discussion took place in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation into English. On PAMM’s waterfront terrace, guests enjoyed entertainment by Radio Caracol and DJ Mau Parra.
“Beatriz González: A Retrospective,” is a monumental survey spanning six decades of the artist’s intensive research that addresses cultural and political issues specific to the artist’s home country of Colombia. The exhibition is the first large-scale U.S. retrospective of the work of the Bogotá-based artist, showcasing approximately 150 works, with examples from the early 1960s through the present. The exhibition is on view in the Fernandez Family Galleries.
On view now, “Beatriz González: A Retrospective” premieres at PAMM through Sept. 1, before traveling to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in October.
Beatriz González: A Retrospective is curated by Tobias Ostrander, chief curator and deputy director, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and Mari Carmen Ramírez, Wortham curator of Latin American Art and director, International Center for the Arts of the Americas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
