Divine Savior Academy Junior Jaxson Landwehr recently won highest honors in the year-end cumulative standings of the WordWright Challenge, a national competition for high school students requiring close reading and analysis of many different kinds of prose and poetry.
Competing in the Gold Division contest for 11th and 12th graders, Landwehr was one of the 20 highest-ranked eleventh graders in the entire country in the cumulative standings after the year’s four meets. He was also the Divine Savior Gold Division champion, after attaining a perfect score on the last WordWright Challenge of the year. This was the second perfect score for Landwehr.
The texts for the final WordWright meet this year were a pair of poems by Philip Booth and Alastair Reid for 9th and 10th graders and a short story by Michael Chabon for 11th and 12th graders.
Ryan Kirchoff, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Divine Savior, is proud of how the students continue to progress in their academic reading and analytical skills. “Each year, the WordWright Challenge provides an eclectic challenge for students, as they analyze narratives, opposing arguments, and poetry with common themes. The fact that Jaxson finished in the top 20 juniors in the nation for his work throughout the year is a testament to his overall English literacy ability.”
