Miami Christian School's baseball team has banner year

Winning back-to-back state championships in Class 2-A, you could say it was a great year. In addition to team accolades, 2019 graduate Allen Hernandez was chosen for this year’s Cleveland Indians MLB team while 2016 alumnus Orlando Tribal was drafted by the Washington Nationals.

Adding to the honors, MCS Head Baseball Coach Chris Cuadra was selected to coach the Miami Dade Private Schools team in the HSBN/Miami Marlins Senior All-Star Game. MCS Seniors, Jason Garcia, Jason Marono, Adrian Rodriguez and Arnold Ruiz were chosen as players. The Miami Dade team, under Coach Chris, beat the Broward Private School’s Team 14-3.

Of course, there were lots of scholarship offers for team members as well.

• Jason Garcia was offered baseball scholarships to Arizona Christian University, Shorter University, and Alabama A & M University;
• Jason Marono was offered baseball scholarships to Arizona Christian University, Judson University, Shorter University, and Alabama A & M University;
• Adrian Rodriguez signed with Montreat University to play baseball; and
• Arnold Ruiz was offered baseball scholarships to Alabama A & M University, Bellevue University, Florida National University, Judson University, Shorter University, and Stetson University.

The female athletes were not to be outdone, and also received scholarship offers for the upcoming 2019-20 school year:

• MCS Senior Maria Catalina Alonso was accepted to and offered scholarships to Barry University, Grand Canyon University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Trinidad State. She will be playing basketball next year.
• MCS Senior Laura Torres Moreno was accepted to and offered scholarships, including basketball, to Lynn University, Miami Dade College, Nova Southeastern University, and St. Thomas University.
• MCS Senior, Paula Barrientos, will be playing basketball next year on scholarship at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Missouri.
• MCS Senior Lina Valentino was accepted to and offered basketball scholarships to Florida National University and Western Nebraska.

School will be starting again before you know it. Students are invited to attend the Back to School Bash on Monday, August 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to pick up their schedules and locker assignments and meet new faculty and students.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a major in Spanish, Burns has an extensive background in advertising, marketing and reciprocal trade, travel , non profit consulting and management. Before joining Miami's Community Newspapers as a columnist and marketing specialist, Gloria was the Executive Director of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee (6 yrs.) and first Executive Director of the Coral Gables Community Foundation (14 yrs.) and the Pinecrest Community Foundation (1 ½ yrs) . Burns' volunteer activities led her to become a columnist for Community Newspapers writing Gloria’s Gab, that focuses on the non-profit activity, and a host of an online show, Gloria's Gab LIVE. Gloria serves the board of the Rotary Club of Coral Gables as Civic and Charity Chair, and is involved in the club's International Committee. She is an active Life Member of the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee and is Secretary of the Merrick Festival. She serves on the board of directors of the Coral Gables Woman' Club as Publicity Chair and also coordinates the club's monthly fundraiser for various charities with Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger. In addition, Gloria participates in numerous other charitable events and is a member of the Business Forum Group, Profit Inc., the Greater Miami Festival & Events Association and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. In other volunteer activity, Gloria helps Miami Christian School with fund-raising and PR; is an Ambassador and volunteers for events for A Safe Haven for Newborns. She is an active member of the Music Ministry at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she enjoys singing in the choir every weekend.
