The Miami Heat’s lovable mascot, Burnie, and the University of Miami’s Sebastian will highlight the 15th annual Safe Day celebration, Oct. 31, at the Theodore Gibson Park football field, 401 NW 12 St.
The 4 to 8 p.m. event, which is open to the public and billed as a safe and fun alternative to neighborhood trick or treating, will feature a wide variety of food, games, music and rides.
And, of course, Burnie and Sebastian.
“The kids just love Burnie and Sebastian,” said Pastor Willie L. Williams Sr., who founded the event 15 years ago in the back yard of his Greater Mercy Missionary Baptist Church.
“They interact with the children of all ages and make the day fun for everyone.”
The Safe Day event, which has grown to become among the area’s most popular Halloween happenings, is co-sponsored by the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency; Simkins Family Foundation; Overtown Youth Center; Florida Baptist Association; International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA 1416); City of Miami Police Department; City of Miami Net Office; Hot 105; WMBM, and the Biscayne Bay Kiwanis Club, one of South Florida’s most active community service organizations.
“This is a fantastic event which directly benefits the kids of our service area,” said Kellie Gayoso, Biscayne Bay Kiwanis president. “Pastor Williams has done an incredible job not only coming up with the concept of Safe Day but growing it into this terrific kid-friendly event that we’re proud to be part of.”
All children attending Halloween Safe Day must be accompanied by an adult (18-years or older). In addition, for the safety of attendees, there is no alcohol, smoking, scary masks, animals, and profanity.
“We strive every year to make this a fun, clean event for kids and their families,” Pastor Williams said.
