Preparation and Economic Development
I’m excited to be a part of this new Council. The beauty about my seat is that I represent all the residents in the City, and I collaborate with all the Councilmembers. We have a younger Council now, it’s vibrant and we exude new energy. I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on initiatives that will ultimately help to improve the quality of life for our residents.
As an administration, we must always be prepared. While I understand that sometimes there isn’t a plan in place, this moment in time has me looking ahead. I’m responsible for over 114,000 residents. And so, what COVID has taught me is that nothing is promised to anyone. We are a great community of people who really care, and if we have leadership that shows a sense of community, everyone else falls into place.
Economic Development
I have some really bold ideas and plans. I’m very big on economic development and helping our small businesses thrive. My staff will tell you that when I’m purchasing, whether it’s a shirt or business card, it’s coming from a small business in Miami Gardens.
It’s about stimulating our economy right here. My focus is on small businesses, helping them thrive, and getting the message out that we should shop local.
Carrying On
I want to continue the STEM projects that Councilman David Williams started, most notably his science fairs, because we have to provide our children with a space where they can think, learn and understand how things work.
I also want to continue his fresh garden because, at the end of the day, we want to be a healthy community. Communities of color are affected at a much higher rate than others when it comes to diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and so many other chronic illnesses.
What you consume is what you become. Therefore, I’d like to encourage growing a garden in your backyard, growing organic fruits and vegetables, and making it part of your daily ritual to eat well. This will help to improve our culture. Especially now during the Coronavirus pandemic.
A Diverse City
My parents immigrated here from Haiti in search of a better life. They worked really hard to live the American dream, and who would have thought that one day their daughter would be the first Haitian American elected in the City of Miami Gardens.
I love the culture and the diversity of this City. There are folks who live in Miami Gardens that are Haitian, Trinidadian, Dominican, Cuban and it’s just such a beautiful mix. No matter where we’re from, it is all of our time to shine.
