Making healthier food options accessible to Miami Gardens residents
Florida Impact to End Hunger, a part of the City of Miami Gardens’ Live Healthy Miami Gardens’ REACH grant from the CDC, has been building a coalition of Healthy Corner Stores in Miami Gardens. This coalition is working to make healthier food choices easily accessible within the community.
Florida Impact is working closely with six (6) local retailers to increase their selection of healthy food options, and to promote these items through signage, educational materials, and shopper incentives. Keep an eye out for the Miami Gardens Healthy Corner Stores logo at retailers throughout the City.
As the New Year begins, the project will move to the next level! Florida Impact is working with the City Council to support the sustainability of this healthy retail program by developing citywide standards for an official Healthy Corner Store Designation Program. LHMG will work closely with existing partners and new stores to develop strategies to meet and achieve the designation. Almost 20,000 Miami Gardens’ residents live within a 10-minute walk of one of the current six (6) partner stores. The goal of the designation program is to make Healthy Corner Stores accessible to every Miami Gardens resident, ensuring that delicious, healthy foods are easily available throughout the community.
