Tania Cruz-Gimenez is running for election to the Group II seat of the Coral Gables City Commission in the Apr. 13 municipal election.
Cruz-Gimenez has been a Coral Gables for more than 14 years. She has been a practicing attorney for 16 years. Her office is located in the heart of Downtown Gables.
“As we approach Coral Gables’ second century, it is imperative that we have a clearly defined vision that is supported by stakeholders, and honors that of our revered founder, George E. Merrick, but that is also sufficiently resilient to withstand 21st Century challenges.
“Upon taking office, I will meet with all stakeholders (residents, business owners, community organizations, city staff and developers) to develop a vision for a resilient Miracle Mile that respects our city’s history, while harnessing technology, planning and design to mitigate traffic, promoting alternative modes of transportation, adding tree canopies for greater pedestrian activity, and addressing existing infrastructure and post-pandemic challenges.
“Collaborating closely with local businesses and organizations to support events and initiatives that increase pedestrian activity will be a priority. I will strive to make temporary permits allowing outdoor seating permanent to keep local businesses thriving, while immediately developing solutions to keep residents dining outdoors during the summer.
“While residents agree that our fire and police departments are second to none, we are tired of the high-speed, cut-through traffic disrupting our residential streets. This, coupled with poor illumination and years of broken city promises related to traffic mitigation, can no longer be tolerated. The city has already undergone a study and has a plan to install traffic mitigation devices throughout the city. I intend to expedite this process to ensure that residents’ safety remain our city’s top priority.
“I will work with colleagues to expedite the transition from our existing, antiquated paper review system, to e-permitting, which allows for increased efficiency through concurrent review of applications by each building discipline. I will also immediately work to audit all city procedures to increase efficiency and accountability.
“As we embark upon our second century, one thing is clear to me. If we are to truly preserve our City Beautiful for all generations, we must respect one another and act civilly.
From day one, I will always listen to and treat stakeholders, staff, and colleagues with the utmost civility. I will debate vigorously if necessary, but always in good faith, continually finding ways to bridge divides and work towards consensus.”
